Wellness Wednesday Awakening the Spirit: A Journey into the Cacao Ceremony

In a world where the pace of life seems to accelerate daily, it's essential to find moments of stillness and connection with our inner selves. The ancient practice of the cacao ceremony, a sacred ritual that dates back to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, offers a unique opportunity to do just that.

The cacao ceremony, often referred to as "drinking chocolate," has its roots in the indigenous cultures of Central and South America, where cacao was and still is considered a sacred plant. Ancient Mayans and Aztecs used cacao not only as a beverage but also in their religious and spiritual rituals. It was believed to connect people with the divine and enhance their spiritual insight.

The modern cacao ceremony has evolved into a powerful tool for self-reflection, healing, and spiritual growth. It typically involves the consumption of a special type of cacao, known as ceremonial-grade cacao, which is prepared and consumed with intention. The primary purposes of a cacao ceremony are:

  • Heart Opening: Cacao is often referred to as the "food of the gods" and is believed to have the ability to open the heart, promoting feelings of love, compassion, and connection with oneself and others.

  • Meditation and Introspection: The ceremony creates a meditative space where participants can go inward, explore their thoughts and emotions, and gain deeper insights into their lives and spiritual paths.

  • Emotional Release: Cacao is said to facilitate the release of stored emotions and trauma, allowing participants to let go of what no longer serves them and make space for healing and growth.

  • Connection & Community: Cacao ceremonies are often conducted in a group setting, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. This communal aspect can be incredibly supportive and comforting.

  • And I am now offering private cacao ceremonies one to one, with small groups in person and on zoom.

The Ceremony

A typical cacao ceremony involve several key elements:

  • Preparation: The ceremonial-grade cacao is carefully prepared and often blessed or infused with intention by me. I buy only the purest cacao from my sources in Peru and Guatemala.Participants are encouraged to set their own intentions for the ceremony.

  • Consumption: Participants drink the cacao in a quiet, mindful manner. It is common to sit in a circle, and the cacao is sipped slowly as everyone tunes into their inner experience. I share the ceremony with the opening and blessings from the lineage I work with which is the lineage if the Seven Rays in Peru. I open the directions and call on our sacred mountains, animal allies, elements and ancestors.

  • Meditation: Guided meditation, chanting, drumming, or other rituals may be included to deepen the experience and promote inner exploration.

  • Sharing: After the ceremony, participants often have the opportunity to share their experiences and insights, creating a supportive and safe space for emotional expression.

  • Or sometimes, depending on the type of ceremony we are creating, we dance.

Benefits of the Cacao Ceremony
